Cash Cab and Thought from God

9/28/2010

Hello, everyone!  We are in....(drumroll, please)....Comfort Suites!!!  We're watching Cash Cab on the TV here - have you ever watched it before?  It's pretty cool.  These three people just doubled their $400 dollars for a total of $800.  They're happy, and so am I!!  We just came from the indoor pool, but only Noah and Nathan went in.  I sat on the side with Nicholas and Mom while Dad...uh...I don't know exactly where Dad was or what he was doing.  :)  Anyway, we four kids are in our room (we got two rooms, one for the kids and one for our parents), I sprawled out on one bed, the three boys crowded onto the other.  I guess I scared them or something.... oops.  Oh, well.

I meant to mention this earlier, but I forgot.  A few days ago, I was really, really hungry, dinner was ready, but we were waiting on Dad and Nicholas to get back from wherever they were (I forget).  I asked Mom why we didn't go ahead and eat, and she said she wasn't going to try to work with the messy kitchen counter right then, and we would just wait until they got back.  So, mainly because I was SO hungry, I started to clean up the counter.  As I was doing it, I had this rare moment of enlightenment, obviously from God, in which I thought, "Hey, this is how God wants us to obey Him.  I mean, He wants us to be hungry - really, really, hungry - for Him, and to work to clean up our act and start obeying Him, no matter what happens, no matter what He says, no matter how hard it is."

Well, I'm sorry if this blog didn't make very much sense in some places...I'm trying to blog and watch the TV at the same time, and it's not working out so well.  God bless!!

Look, Honey - We Have New Neighbors!

I'm ba-ack!!!  Finally!  So sorry I haven't posted in forever - we have been crazy, crazy, crazy busy the last couple of days.  The only times my mom posts is late at night when I'm in bed listening to her computer keys clicking (or sleeping - me sleeping, I mean, not the computer keys), or in the early in the morning, while I am definitely sleeping.  Those are the only available times, anyway.  For the last few days, as you already know, we've been in Washington.  Before that, we had our 'might as well' day.  Check my mom's post from couple of days ago - you'll know what I mean.  And I posted the day before that.  Anyway, we've been busy. :)

But today - no, siree, we are not busy!!  Well, at least not going into D.C.  Actually, Dad and Noah are at the Spy Museum (or they might be driving home now), but the rest of us wanted a break.  Oh, but we are going to visit some of our friends tonight.  I can't wait!!  He and she (I'm not saying names unless I get their permission) got married about 3 years ago, I think, and now they have a 4-week-old baby girl!!  I can't wait to see all three of them; I've met both the adults, but this will be the first time I'll see the baby girl.  (BTW, Dad and Noah just drove up.)  Anyway, what I was going to say in the first place (sometimes I get kind of off track, if you haven't noticed), was that we got to sleep in late this morning - until about 10:30!!  Well, we didn't actually sleep that long, but we didn't have breakfast until than.  Speaking of breakfast, we had pancakes and sausage this morning, thanks to the campground host.  We ate outside, near where the chef was cooking.  Yum!

Sooo.... I got a digital camera!!!!  It's amazing.  It has a pretty good sized screen on the front of the camera, as well as the back.  You turn that front screen on, turn the camera around and take a photo of yourself without cutting your head off (which is what I would normally do).  It's amazing!  It has tons of different features, and fairly user-friendly, too.  I'm so glad I got it.  I bought it the day before we trekked into D.C., and I'm so thankful I went ahead did it.  I got some cool pictures, too.  Here's a few pictures that I like:
Picture
This is a pic of the Freedom Statue inside the Capitol.  While we were at the Library of Congress, our tour guide told us that all - or at least most - of the statues sculpted in the 17th and 18th centuries that symbolize a concept - freedom, for example - are female.  The statues of real people were primarily men.  Cool, huh?
Picture
This is a pic of "The Apotheosis of Washington", George Washington, that is.  When I took this picture, I was in the Rotunda in the Capitol, looking up into the rounded ceiling.  This picture makes it look like a flat ceiling, but it was dome-like, not flat.  Anyway, the artist of this painting was depicting George Washington rising up into the heavens, in the middle.  Circling that are thirteen young women, symbolizing (what else?) the original thirteen states.  Around the edges of this work of art are six different scenes representing six things - War, Science, Marine, Commerce, Mechanics, and Agriculture.  BTW, it was painted by Constantino Brumidi in 1865.  That's your history lesson for the day.
Picture
This is where we ate lunch a few days ago.  We met one of our friends there, a person my parents had met in Switzerland, though they live here in the USA.  We had actually first met the couple a few days before that, but the guy (again, not using names without permission) works in that area, at the Capitol, I think, or something like that.  He's really funny.  You see those stickers Mom and Noah have on?  Those let us into the Capitol and into the House of Representatives.  But they weren't in session, so we just sat there for a few minutes, looking around, taking a break, and then we left. :)  Oh, you see the flowers behind them?  I took a close up of one (below) - to me, it looks like a screen saver!!!  The flowers were really pretty.
Picture
Picture
OK, I need a vote - should I sell Nathan and have $1,491,200 (that measure thing is wrong - it was too high up on the wall - Nathan's only about 5 feet, 4 inches), or should keep him and have a pain in the neck?  Just kidding!!  He's not always a pain in the neck.  Just sometimes, like when he yells at the screen of his iPod Touch when he's playing a game, while I'm trying to blog. :)  (BTW, sorry the picture is sideways - I couldn't turn it.)
Right now we have almost completed seven loads of laundry.  Well, it was seven loads of laundry.  Now it's eight, because several things didn't dry all the way in the dryers, so now they are drying.  And we're in the process of folding and putting everything else away.  Oh, and a deck of cards was left in one of the boys shorts, and most got torn to little pieces and spread over almost everything.  That was fun.  Totaled, it all cost around $25, and a huge chunk of our time today.  Whoopee. :)

One more thing: yesterday morning us kids were sitting down to breakfast, while Mom was sitting in the back of the RV on her laptop or something.  Dad opened up the window and promptly called back to her, "Look, honey - we have new neighbors!"  Living on the road has certainly been a bit, ah, different, shall we say. :)  But I am absolutely loving it!!  God bless y'all with a great weekend and a great day of rest!!

P.S. Wow - I didn't know I have a storm named after me, Mr. Robert!!  Cool.  I looked it up, and I had two hurricanes named after me, too - one was before I was even born!  God must have told them to name if after me. :)  Hmmm...now that I think about, maybe two hurricanes and a storm named after me isn't exactly a good thing. :) But it's still kind of cool - and all three were spelled correctly: N-I-C-O-L-E, without an 'H'.

It's me again!  You know, comments would be really nice on here.  I know y'all are really busy, just like us, but a short little thing like, "Sounds like you're having a lot of fun!" or something like that would be great.  It's like when you were little and would always rejoice with sheer happiness when you recieved a letter in the mail.  I did when I was little - in fact, I still do - hey, I'm still a kid!!  A very social kid, too.  So, even short little comments would be awesome!!  Thanks!

I was glancing over yesterday's post, and I realized it's kind of long.  So, even though today was just as exciting, I'll see if I can make it a bit shorter so I won't bore you to death.  I'll try, at least - and probably fail. :) I've hated summarizing, ever since I was a little kid when I would write a book report.  Mine would usually turn out to be the longest. :)

So, about today, my mom, Nathan, Noah, and I went to Jamestown.  My dad and Nicholas stayed home because they didn't really feel like going.  We came over on the ferry again, and this time we noticed that this one was called Pocahontas.  The other ferry was called something else, but my mom really liked this name.  Anyway, on the ride home we got out and went up on the top deck.  The wind was as strong as ever, but it was warmer, and it felt really good!  We stayed up there until the last second, then we had to go back down.

The replica of the original settlement of Jamestown was a bit smaller than Williamsburg, so we didn't spend the entire day there, but certainly a good deal of it.  The first thing we did was immediately go to the ships, which were 'parked' in the water at the edge of the land.  The Susan Constant was the biggest, but we also went on the Discovery and another boat which I forget the name of.  We were not allowed on the Godspeed, because it had just been out to a festival or something and it wasn't ready for visitors.  You may have noticed that I said 'Susan Constant', not 'Susan B. Constant'.  The original name was Susan Constant, but people started saying Susan B. Constant because it sounded better and other famous things had a 'B.' in them.  Some of the things we saw as we made our way slowly back to the entrance were two complete canoes and a canoe almost finished, several furs, and my favorite were the Indian (the Powhatan, to be exact - yep, like Pocahontas) huts.  They weren't teepees.  They were fairly large, in fact, in an oval shape with a sort of opening at the top to let out smoke.  They were filled with woven baskets, countless furs, some tools, pottery, and one even had a tortoise shell hanging on the 'wall'.  There was a fire pit in the center of the hut, and also a bed or two.  We determined that the fox fur was the softest, but the fur next to it was the silkiest.

A lady who worked there told us at about ages 5 and 6, the Indian boys would play a target game with 'darts' which my brothers and I tryed and mostly failed.  At about our age, the boys would be able to accurately shoot, with bow and arrow, a moving target about 40 yards away.  Pretty impressive, huh?  I definitely can't do that, and I don't think my brothers can either. :)

Well, I know I said I would share the pictures from yesterday, but we still haven't put them on the computer yet.  And my dad has them on his phone, and he's currently using the necessaries at the campground.  So, you'll have to wait until the next time I post.  However, I do have the pictures from today, because my mom used her camera!  Here they are:
Picture
Me on the top deck of the Pocahontas
Picture
Nathan 'sleeping' on the bed in the captain's quarters on the Susan Constant
Picture
The Three Musketeers
Picture
Us at the entrance of Jamestown
Does anyone think I need a digital camera?  I do!!! :) I might get one tomorrow, and I can't wait!  I've been saving up for a while, and I'm totally ready to buy a camera.  'Over-ready', you might say - I wanted to get one before we started the trip, but we were to crazy busy at that time.

Well, I hope you enjoy this, and I hope you enjoyed your day today!  God bless!

Colonial Williamsburg

Hello, everyone!  I have had a wonderful day today, and I hope everyone else has had a great day, too!

We took some really cool pictures today at Colonial Williamsburg, but they are on my dad's phone, and my dad's busy right now, so I'm not going to bother him. :) Early this morning it was my dad's turn to wake me up to go off to spend some time with each other.  He got me up at 6:40-something or 6:50-something, but this time I was expecting it.  I jumped up (quietly), changed, tucked my Bible underneath the crook of my arm, and we were off - after I accidentally dropped some shirts on my mom when I was trying to get my jacket out.  Luckily she was already awake, and later she told me she didn't mind it that much.  *Phew*

We drove down to the beautiful gardens that they have near the mansion, walked around the gardens, and then sat down on the rocking chairs on the porch of the mansion to read the Bible passages together.  BTW, this is a small campground that's on what used to be and practically still is a large plantation.  It has several historical buildings and 'points of interest', as the map says.  My dad told us that the wish of the lady who sold this plantation was that it would always be a productive plantation.  And it still is - so far we know that they grow three crops of food - soy beans, cotton, and corn.  We all picked a little cotton yesterday, and Nathan picked through his and got rid of practically all the dirt and seeds (yes, there are seeds in cotton) in his clump.  It became a soft, white fluffy clump of cotton - I couldn't tell the difference between it and the kind you buy at the store.  He did a really good job.

Anyway, this morning we went into Williamsburg, and we went on a walking tour with an awesome guide for about a half an hour.  It's amazing - I touched doors, stair railings, and other things that Thomas Jefferson had touched himself!!!  The governors palace, among several other buildings, was actually restored, because it had been burnt to ashes.  The only two ways it was rebuilt was because the people back then (I think it was actually Thomas Jefferson) had sketched very meticulate drawings of it, and the foundation was still left there.  So everything in Williamsburg was either original or was rebuilt very carefully and precisely.  It was amazing!

There were several horse-drawn carriages steered by men in authentic 18th century apparel, and that means the horses, uh, "went" in the middle of the road.  "Walk around the horse dooky!"  Nicholas warned.

Some of the things we did included looking around the original Wythe house, visiting a cabinet makers workshop (which made more than cabinets, by the way), stopping by a weaving, sewing and spinning place which was very interesting (in fact, she demonstrated how to spin wool, and since we had picked some cotton, I asked her how she spun cotton, and she showed us!), watching a few re-inactments, and Nathan, Mom and I toured the governors palace.  Our tour guide was so much fun - she basically acted the whole time; we were servants being rented out to her - she was our mistress for the time we were there.  It was a lot of fun.

BUT, (and there's always a 'but', isn't there), I was totally wiped by the time we got home - even before we got home, I was really tired.  Thankfully, I had traded chores with Nicholas that morning.  I had made breakfast for everyone instead of Nicholas doing it, and Nicholas helped made dinner for everyone instead of me doing that - and boy, did that pay off!!  :)

All in all, each of us thoroughly enjoyed a pleasurable day - in other words, we had a lot of fun!  God bless y'all!

P.S. Sorry for any typos or anything you might find - I don't feel like reading over this whole thing and editing it. :)

Random Ramblings

9/17/2010

Hmmm...that title sounds familiar.  I mean, I typed 'Random' and then I immediately though of 'Ramblings'.  I'm probably copying it from a book, or someone else's blog, or something.  Maybe I used it already.  Anyway...

I missed Wacky Wednesday Wonders - we were really busy last Wednesday, and I forgot about it.  So, here's some wacky wonders:

1. In one year, more Monopoly money is printed than real money throughout the world.
2. The inventor of the Waffle Iron did not like waffles. (Who could not like waffles??)
3. Every time you lick a stamp you consume 1/10 of a calorie. (Well, if you have twenty friends to write 'thank you' cards to after your birthday, you have an incentive: you're gaining 2 calories!!)

4. Is is estimated that 4 million 'junk' telephone calls (phone solicitations by people or programmed machines) are made every day in the USA.
5. Thomas Edison was afraid of the dark. (Remember, he's the one who invented the lightbulb.)
6. The longest recorded flight of a chicken is 13 seconds. (Hey, that's a long time for a chicken!!  Think about it...1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi, 4 Mississippi, 5 Mississippi, 6 Mississippi, 7 Mississippi, 8 Mississippi, 9 Mississippi, 10 Mississippi, 11 Mississippi, 12 Mississippi, 13 Mississippi, and the chicken goes down.)

Well, was Wacky Wednesday Wonders a wonderful, whopping, wow-filled writing or what??  OK, so maybe it was leaning toward the 'what'. :) Anyway....

Does anyone here get tired of making your bed?  I'll eventually get tired of doing this, but right now it's pretty cool, and it's pretty easy:
Picture
Step One:  The night before, I blow up my air mattress.  Here is the finished product the next morning, after I lay out the comforter. (I don't ever use a sheet - I only have a white mattress cover, a blue fitted sheet, and a matching comforter.)

Picture
Step Two:  I then deflate my air mattres very neatly and remove the pillow.

Picture
Step Three:  Finally, I roll it up, covers and all.  That I night I roll it back out and start the process all over again.

I hope you found it easy enough to endure that educational example.  I like writing sentences that use a lot of words that start with the same letter.  A book that I read gave me the idea, since the author did that a lot.  Anyway, I gotta go now.

May our great God bless you with godly goodness on this gorgeous day!!

Yesterday and Today (Exciting title, huh? I made it up myself. It took, like, a whole second to think about it, and then a whole two or three seconds to type. I put a lot of work into that title, can't you tell?)

Hello, everyone!!!  I hope you read my mom's blog about the Ethiopian resteraunt.  The picture on the bottom on her post is of the two newest members of their family - one just born, another just adopted - I'll call him Jake.

Anyway, the Ethiopian resteraunt was a lot of fun!!!  And guess what?  Between the kids of our family and the kids of their family, we made a total of five spills of water - all under three or four hours!!  Yeah, we were there for a while. :)  It was fun to eat with our hands, and we ended up sharing food off of different peoples' plates that we had ordered so we could all try everything.  Each and every plate got passed around the table at least once. :)  We had this pancakish-spongey bread called injera.  Jake told us that is was pronounced 'in-year-a', or close to that. :) It was really good - we dipped in some stuff that was a lot like hummus, along with string beans (I think that's what it was...).  The bread was a lot like silverware - you used it to pick up the string beans and then dip that in the hummus-like-dip, and you also used it to pick up some of the messy meats.  Other cubes of meat, like lamb, you could just use your fingers.  It was a great experience, and because we all shared the food, it really felt like we were all a family.  It was cool.

This morning we went to the church which our friends go to - we went there about four years ago, and we got a picture in the exact same spot and the exact same pose as last time, us kids, I mean.  It was a different chair, but in the same corner.   Nathan and one of the boys squeezed into it (again) and I smiled for the camera from the back (again).  It was pretty funny.  Only last time, Noah posed by the side of the chair, and Nicholas stretched out across Nathan and the other boy in the seat.  (Once again, I'm not saying names for the same reason.)  We had fun at their youth group, and my parents enjoyed the service.  Later we're going to go swimming with them.

One more thing: last night we went over to their house (after dinner at the Ethiopian resteraunt), and we stayed there until about midnight!!!  Then both of us families had to wake up early to go to church.  Haha!!

God bless everyone!!!

The Bathroom Door

9/11/2010

Hey, everyone!!  I just wanted to post something short...

First of all, I think we need a lock on our bathroom door.  I think everyone except for my parents have been intruded while trying to have some privacy in the restroom.  It's a pain.  I even barged in on someone on accident...and then later that someone accidentally barged in on me.  So, I think you'll all agree with me that we need a lock on our bathroom door.

Today we're going to hang out (for the third day in a row) with a family that's nearby here.  We're having so much fun with them - we haven't seen them in a while, and we don't see them that often, but we've known them for so long that they're like family.  It's a pretty big family - there is the oldest son who just went off to college about two weeks ago.  There's five more boys, one who was adopted from Ethiopia very recently - one boy is a few years older than me, one is three weeks older than me, the adopted boy is 11 and is learning English very quickly, another boy is 7, and the youngest boy is a baby a few months old and is the  most precious little guy ever.  And there is only one girl, a three-year-old who is cutest girl to ever live on earth!!!  She is amazingly entertaining and lovable.  Then the parents, of course.  I'm not saying any names, by the way, just in case they don't want me to.

Well, we're leaving right now for their house!!  Bye, and God bless!!

Wacky Wednesday Wonders

9/8/2010

Hi, all!  :)  I hope everyone had a wonderful and succesful day!!

First of all, some of my friends on cyberspace have things on their blogs like 'Fun Fact Friday'. Here they list a few funny facts that they have discovered.  So I'm going to copy their idea (yep, I'm a copycat)  and have a 'Wacky Wednesday Wonders' on my blog - yeah, it's pretty cheesy, but it's the best thing I could come up with for Wednesday, because I wanted to do it today. :)  So there!  :)  Here are today's Wacky Wonders:

1. The Romans invented popsicles.
2. Dentists have recommended that a toothbrush be kept at least 6 feet away from a toilet to avoid airborne particles resulting from the flush.  (Whatever that means :) haha).
3. 15% of Americans secretly bite their toes.
4. Eskimos do not gamble.
5. The name for Oz in "The Wizard of Oz" was made when the creator, Frank Baum, looked at his filing cabinet and saw O-Z, hence "Oz."

There we go!!

Now for the real stuff:  Last night I woke up two times to discover my air mattress was slowly leaking air.  Lovely.  I was so tired I didn't care and went back to sleep.  Now that I think of it, if felt as if I was lying on the ground with puffs of air holding me up in various places.  I wasn't exactly comfortable, but I slept like a baby until my dad woke me up at 7:30 AM.  I was still half asleep until I got a shower.  Boy, did it feel good!!  I used the showers in the restroom that is, like, twenty feet from out RV, right next to the Activity Center.  The showers were awesome - great water pressure, warm water, and no bugs flying around!  Five star showers!! :)

We spent the morning, until about noon, touring Fort Sumter.  To get there we rode a ferry called The Spirit of the Lowcountry, which was three stories high!  It was cool.  We had so much fun at the fort; did you know that the first shots fired of the Civil War were actually from Fort Johnson, not Fort Sumter?  Fort Johnson bombarded Fort Sumter, and then Fort Sumpter fired back.  Anyway, our visit there was very educational and interesting.  The fort was only a story high, but originally it had been three stories high!!  It was amazing.  Back at the RV, we ate lunch outside and then cleaned up.  Not shortly aftwerwards Mom, Nicholas and I went to the beach while Noah and Dad went to the nearby climbing wall and watched Nathan climb.  The picture above is a messy picture of Mom and I (obviously) at the beach.  Here is a picture of a butterfly I found floating on the water:

Needless to say, after a long, full day, I won't have any trouble sleeping tonight!!  God bless!!!

"Do you wanna go?"

Yes, I'm already posting again. :)  I just had to share this story...

Anyway, you know how I said my mom and I were planning to go to the beach this morning to do our quiet times together?  Well, last night we stayed up kinda late, so we decided that we weren't going to wake up early.  BUT...this morning I woke up to my mom leaning over me, in her PJs, asking, "Do you wanna go?"  After I got over the shock of having been waken up at 6:51 AM by my mom with her bedhead hair, I replied groggily, "Do you want to?"  "Yeah," she said quickly, peering at my face expectantly. "OK," I said, still half a sleep.  So we jumped into our clothes, grabbed our Bibles, ran out the door, hopped into the car, and hastily drove off - all without waking anyone.  Apparently, God really wanted us to go to the beach to do our quiet times - He woke Mom up at 6:51 in the morning!  :)

By the time we got to the beach the sun was just over the horizon, a small pink circle, among a handful of glowing clouds and a purplish-pink and blue sky.  It was beautiful, to say the least.  The sand was soft and the waves were crashing in the distance and softly lapping at the shore.  The smell of salt water filled the air, and Mom and I were awed by it all.  And to think, God made all of this with a flick of His wrist and a couple of words.  With only that, He knew that the moon would affect the tides and that the sky would turn different, gorgeous colors as the sun rose - He knew  that Jodie Gregory and her daughter would be enjoying the beauty of His creations at a little after 7:00 AM on Friday, the 3rd of September, 2010.  What a great God we have!  Why do we ever doubt Him?

And as if that wasn't enough, we had a great quiet time!  We read the passage together and prayed together; while I was praying I opened my eyes for a second, and a lady waved at me and I smiled back.  When we were done with our quiet times and walking up to the car, we said hi to that lady, and found out that she was Christian!!  (I'm going to call her Ms. C).  We talked with her, told her about our trip, and she asked us to be praying for her church that was struggling financially.  My mom said, "We'll pray right here."  So right there on the beach, we three made a little prayer circle,  clasping each others' hands, and my mom prayed for Ms. C's church.  As soon as my mom finished praying, Ms. C started praying for our trip.  It was wonderful!!!  We felt and still feel so blessed.

Now that is what I call a divine appointment.  God bless!

Being a Kid

Hello, everyone!!  Sorry I haven't posted in a while...again. :)  The week or so before we left was crazy busy, with garage sales, people picking up beds, sofas and book shelves, us packing stuff in the RV, etc.  I'm so glad we're finally on the road!  I'm loving all of it - swimming in the ocean, riding bikes around, touring St. Augustine, and tomorrow morning my mom and I are planning to go out on the beach and do our quiet times together.  Don't tell the boys!! :)  Hopefully we'll post some pictures later of our day.

We had fun visiting a fort that was built in 1702 (!!), after breakfast.  After that we ate lunch and looked at glass art and some paintings by Dr. Seuss, Thomas Kinkade, and someone else with a Chinese name that I forgot.  This afternoon, Nicholas, Nathan, Mom and I went to the beach.  Mom and I didn't go in the water, but Nicholas did and Nathan built these amazing sand castles with moats and tunnels and everything.  It was cool. :)

Nathan and I just biked around the campground, and then we ran for a while.  That was fun.  My mom is making dinner, and Noah is playing on the Wii Fit Plus that some of our friends gave us (if you're reading this, thank you SO MUCH!!!) with Nicholas and Nathan watching.  My dad is out in the car with his laptop, counseling a client with Skype.

So basically, today I just had fun being a kid.
