We pulled into our campground at 4:45pm - how about that?? Our site is right across from this cool playground and a pond. We didn't know what to do with ourselves with that much daylight! But we quickly filled it up by taking some walks around the area and the boys fished in the pond. Plus, there is a basketball court here, so Nathan & Nicholas got some hang time in! Nicole snapped some pictures, so here ya go! Tomorrow, we drive over to Mt. Rushmore - can't wait! Blessings!
Our travel day went very smoothly. We parked at a Walmart in Sheridan, WY last night, and that is just so convenient for SO many reasons. This morning we re-stocked our fridge and cupboards, ate breakfast, filled our gas tank, and away we went. We only had a 4 hour drive today, so as we started out I decided to try to get some work done for my job. I logged in and noticed that the company’s quarterly taxes were paid… QUARTERLY TAXES!! Yikes! We need to pay OUR quarterly taxes for our s-corp!! Due today! So I logged out of my work and then into the IRS website and filled out the 941 form and was able to print it out on our printer. I had already mapped out where and when we were stopping for gas, and it just happened to be right next to the Post Office, is that cool or what?! So as Tim pumped gas, I walked over and mailed our obligation to good ole' Uncle Sam. So glad I could get that done! Whew!

![]() As predicted - no cell phone or internet service in most of Yellowstone. We got a signal when we were at Old Faithful, but I didn't have my computer with me so all I could do was use a smart phone to post a title (it won't let you do anything else). So, to finish the tire story, Joe did a great job locating tires for us, putting them on, and sending us on our way. He was so nice, and he said he has been doing this since he was 13 years old! He pointed out the old school house across the street from his house/business that he started going to back in 1955. I love meeting people like Joe, I just wish it could have been under different circumstances. Well, once he was done, we got on our way, and if I remember correctly it was about 7pm when we got back on the road. That put us into our campground around 10:45 at night - and boy are those campsites in Yellowstone tight! I had already read about that, so we were semi-prepared, but we just barely fit our RV, our tow dolly, and our car in there. No matter, we got all hooked up, got ready for bed, and fell fast asleep. The next day (yesterday) we were gone from our camper for 12 hours straight! We first wanted to see Old Faithful, so we made a beeline for it right out of the shoot. Nicole read some Bible passages for us on the way, and we sang some songs, so we had a very abbreviated Little Church. As we were driving in to the Old Faithful area, I saw Old Faithful just finishing going off – bummer. But we spent some time just taking everything in, and then the kids talked us into getting ice cream – yummy! There was a boardwalk around Old Faithful, so we walked on that, and then visited the Visitor’s Center (how appropriate) and watched a short film, and then it was time for the Old Geyser to spew forth its contents again. It was pretty cool! Here is a picture of us watching it along with a few hundred of our friends, and a picture of Old Faithful itself, along with a few other pictures of our time there: From there we drove north and then east to Little Grand Canyon, and what a breath taking sight that was! But on the way, we saw a couple Elk. We tried to get some pictures, but they really didn't turn out so good, so I'm not uploading them here. Anyway, at Little Grand Canyon we hiked down to a lookout point, and it was really amazing! It reminded us of a cross between Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon – like a much smaller version of both put together. Here are a couple pictures from there (you may need to click on them to enlarge them) . After all that hiking we were starving, so we drove until we found a nice picnic spot that wasn’t very crowded. After setting up everything for lunch, we rubber banded Nicole’s camera to a tree so we could set the timer on the camera and have all of us in the picture. Check out the picture, and then see how we did it with her camera. Pretty cool, eh? Finally, it was time for more wildlife. We came upon a line of cars stopped, and we asked them what they were looking at because we didn’t see anything. They told us a bear had just gone over a ridge so that we couldn’t see him anymore (bummer again – just missed it!). But like Old Faithful, we had a 2nd chance. We drove up a dirt road a ranger had told Tim about, and when we got to the top we realized it was the other side of that ridge, and maybe we would be seeing the bear after all. Sure enough, just a couple minutes after we arrived, the bear arrived, too, and walked right in front of us! It was amazing! I talked to a Ranger about our encounter and showed him some pictures and he said he is pretty sure this was a grizzly because of his collar (they don't collar the other bears) and his rough coat. Here are a couple pictures of him: Isn't that incredible?? From there, we drove over to the Lamar Valley, and we came upon a big field of bison, but they were really far away. So we stopped and I took some pictures of the family goofing around on this rock. Nicole snapped this really cool picture of Nicholas jumping off of it: Soon after driving away from there, this huge bald eagle swooped down from the rightside of us, right in front of us, and down through a valley to the left of us. We were all so mesmerized we didn’t get a picture, but I’m sure we will never forget it! We had just been talking about the fact that seeing pronghorns were kind of rare, when we rounded a bend, guess what we saw? A herd of pronghorns – they were so cute, although a bit far away for good pictures, but here is what we got: We didn't know if we'd get to see any bison closer than that one herd we saw so far away, until shortly after we left the pronghorns. And then, we saw a huge herd up close and personal crossing the road in front of us! It was really amazing to see so many wildlife in one day! We didn’t get home until 9:45pm – another late night dinner, but everyone pitched in and it was ready in 15 minutes and devoured in probably less time than that! This morning, while Nathan & Noah were getting showers and Tim was starting the laundry, I grabbed Nicholas and we went to the nearby visitor's center to listen to a ranger talk and then turn in his 12 page Junior Ranger guide that he had spent all day yesterday filling out. They got everyone's attention in the visitor's center and announced what he had done and presented him the badge - it was really cool! Then we unhooked and checked out, and the boys went fishing for a bit by the marina while Nicole and I took the car and went to look at the mud pots (pee-uuu!). The sulfer was so strong, but they were quite interesting. Here are a couple of shots of our time: When Nicole & I got back, we hooked the car up the RV, and away we went. We drove about 1/2 way to Mr. Rushmore, so we're looking forward getting to Mt. Rushmore tomorrow! Thank you to all who prayed for us over our tire ordeal - it definitely could have been a lot worse! Hope everyone is having a great week!
![]() They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I have some words to add. So, we got on the road way before noon today, and I was so happy that we would actually get 1/2 day today in at Yellowstone along with all day tomorrow. We got about an hour down the road from Helena, Mt where we stayed last night when we heard, "Thud, thud, thud". What is that?? Tim pulled over and we both got out. Right away, we could smell it - burned rubber. We located the culprit, and found out there were 2 culprits - the 2 dualie tires on the passenger side. Are you kidding?? Both tires are blown??? So we called Good Sam and spent over an hour on the phone with them, being placed on hold while they located a place in Butte, MT. It would be 90 minutes before they got to us, and then 90 minutes driving back to them to have the tires rotated and balanced. Argh! I called Mid Florida RV rental and they said they would pay for the tires, so I mentioned this to Good Sam and they all of a sudden became very unfriendly. They said they wouldn't cover anything since this was a rental. What? Tim had specifically told them this was a rental before we purchased our Good Same roadside assistance for this particular RV and they said it would be no problem. Plus, they already had covered us once for the other tire that had a nail in it. Now all of a sudden, they won't cover us. We asked for a refund and cancelled our roadside assistance with them, so at least they gave us a refund. Now it was up to us to locate someone to help us. We found a guy about 8 miles from us who had 2 used tires, so he came and put those on, but when we told him where we were going and he saw there were 6 of us and how big our RV was, he said he didn't feel comfortable letting us go down the road in used tires. So we followed him to his shop, and he took off for somewhere to get us some tires, so we wait. Our reservations at Yellowstone are uncancellable (not a word, but u get the idea) at this point, so we are still hoping to get there by 10pm tonight. And we have a lot to be thankful for - we could have been hurt when the tires blew, we have beautiful scenery around us, and the people we've dealt with (minus Good Sam) have been great! Please be praying Joe gets back quickly with the right tires at a good price and we get on our way asap! Blessings to all! I was awakened this morning to my husband inviting me to a breakfast date at the local 'greasy spoon' (as he calls them) in Hungry Horse, Montana where we were staying (isn't that a great name for a town?). :-) I had the huckleberry pancakes and my, was it delicious! That was so nice to get that time in with just the two of us! We came back to the camper, where I got a shower as Tim got things ready to go on the outside. I curled Nicole's hair, and I just remembered I wanted a picture of her with it curled. But she insisted I be in the picture with her, so she took one of both of us - so just pretend I'm not there. :-) ANYWAY, we spent some time cleaning the inside of the camper while Tim was doing stuff to the outside, and we got out of there at, you guessed it, the crack of noon! Actually, I think it was more like 1pm. We drove over to Columbia Falls (near Kallispell) because the people we are renting this RV from paid for a new spare tire so we needed to pick it up. We spent about another hour there while Tim worked on a valve stem on one of the tires, and then discovered our pin that keeps the tow dolly ramps in place was gone (evidently, someone forgot to put it in place before we left and so it was dragging on the ground by a thin wire that evidently snapped), so Tim had to track down another one of those a few miles away. All of this delay was no problem since we weren't traveling too far today, and are staying at a Wally World tonight anyway, and it gave us time to make and eat lunch!
Finally, we were on our way, and the drive was through, once again, absolutely beautiful countryside. We even saw some more snow capped mountains that I snapped a picture of. We also saw a wolf (or was it a cayote? I don't remember what the consensus was and everyone is asleep!). Either way, it was very cool to see him running, moving much faster than that buffalo we saw last night, so we couldn't get a picture of him. Bummer. We got gas for $3.39/gal (which is way better than the $3.99 we paid in California!), so we were glad for that. Dinner was ravioli for the kids and salmon for Tim and me, and then Nicole had a great idea of watermelon. She and Nathan walked in to the Walmart and got it for us, and I cut it up. We were eating it outside when one of our neighbors (there are several RVs here tonight) came out of his camper, so we offered him some since leftover watermelon would be pretty hard to store in our small refrigerator! He went and got his wife, and we had a really nice conversation right here in the Walmart parking lot, eating watermelon. That was fun! But now it is bedtime, so I'm going to post some pictures here and then hit the hay myself. We will be staying inside Yellowstone starting tomorrow until Monday, and so far our experience with all the national parks is that there is pretty much no cell phone or internet reception anywhere in the parks, so don't be surprised if you don't see any updates here until Monday night or Tuesday morning! The pictures below are 1) Tim and me at our breakfast date 2) Nathan standing by these huge tires at the place we picked up our spare tire (he thought they were so cool!) 3) snow capped mountains 4) watermelon - yummy 5) me blogging 6) Nicole's curly hair. ![]() So we got up and left a the crack of ... noon. Just getting 6 people ready and out the door can be crazy sometimes! It started with Nicole waking first and going on a bike ride, and then I got up and went and sat by the river with her, and Nathan came out and stood on the stump in front of us, so I had to snap this picture. :-) Finally, the other 3 woke up so we had breakfast, and then had to get lunches ready, yada, yada, yada, and before we knew it, it was 12:00pm! So finally, we headed into the park. The first 20 minutes was all territory we had covered earlier, but I have to say, I was surprised at how crowded it was for a Thursday! Several people had warned us that Yosemite would be crowded, but it didn't seem all that crowded. But today at Glacier National Park, we couldn't find a parking space at any of the turn outs or the visitor's center at Logan Pass - it was just so packed! And the temperature was really warm - in the upper 70's / lower 80's! Maybe it was the gorgeous day that brought out the extra people, I just know there were lots of them! Despite the warm temperatures, we still saw some snow and also some gorgeous mountain views: We finally made it towards the Eastern side of the park, and it really thinned out and parking was no problem! So we parked and ate lunch at a picnic table right next to our car, and took a hike down to a waterfall...that was a lot of fun! It had been a little warm hiking to the falls, but upon arriving there, everything cooled off with the mist from the waterfall - it felt SO good! Nicole took some more pictures of flowers, and I just have to include a couple here. Check out the size of that dandelion! We hiked back to the car and completed the drive to the eastern side of the park and the visitor's center there. Then, we parted ways with Tim for a couple of hours as he had a couple of client appointments. The boys did some fishing, while Nicole and I did some reading. Below are some photos of the boys fishing. Check out Noah's catch of the day - a stick! When Tim was finished talking to his clients, he showed the boys a nice spot to fish in the shade. Nathan caught a couple of fish there, but they were too small to keep he said. However, he did see a beaver, so that was cool! By the time they packed up their fishing gear it was after 8pm and we still had a 2 hour drive home! We had to choose between 2 routes - 1 route took us back through the park, and the other took us down around the park. We all prayed and then looked up and saw some nasty clouds rolling in torwards the park, so we opted to go around instead. The clouds were so interesting on the back side of the mountains. We watched them "climb" over the mountains and creep down the back side of them - it was quite fascinating! Here are a couple pictures of that: Nicole snapped some pictures of the sunset as we drove and we all looked for any wildlife. We hadn't really seen anything, and then, out in the middle of nowhere, we saw something I really hadn't been expecting to see. I had been looking for deer or elk or maybe even bear, but not this. It was a lone buffalo - all by itself. It looked so out of place! But it was definitely wildlife, so Nicole got a shot of it. I'll leave you with pictures of the sunset and the 1 lone buffalo. Enjoy!
Well, after driving a majority of the day yesterday, Tim made us a scrumptious shrimp dinner last night - yummy! Here are some pictures we took during dinner last night: We love our campground - there are only 3 sites here, and we are the only ones here and it is right on this big river. I took a picture out of our bedroom window of the river that you can see below. They have basketball courts here, so Nathan has been very happy, and a cool playground with a merry go round that Nicholas loves doing (how anyone can do those without getting sick is beyond me!), and a horse shoe pit, and swings, and just too many things to list here. We enjoyed just taking it easy for the most part today, getting showers, some played horse shoes, Tim and Nicole & Nathan went bike riding, Nicole sat by the river and talked on the phone to a friend, Nicholas did some swinging, that kind of thing. Nicholas opened up a new jar of peanut butter at lunch time and decided it needed a smiley face, so he did that and Nicole snapped a picture: Then we all loaded up and went into Glacier National Park so the boys could go fishing and Nicole and I could read. Another beautiful lake with mountains all around - amazing! Nicholas got tired of fishing on the shore, so he took off his shirt and went on into the water to fish in deeper waters. All of it was to no avail, as no fish were caught. And now he had another dilemna on his hands - he didn't bring a change of clothes. So we sent him to the bathroom to take off his shorts, and he came back out with just the shirt on his back and a towel around his waist. His adoring sister snapped the picture of him below despite his protests that she not - what could he do? So I thought I should share the picture here. :-) On the way out of the park we saw a doe and her 2 fawns that were SO cute! I couldn't get a picture of the fawns, but I did get the doe. Nicole is becoming quite the photographer. She takes lots of pictures, especially of flowers, that I don't normally include in my blog post because there are just too many. But I thought I'd go ahead and give a sample of her artwork - she really is getting quite good at it. Enjoy! Tomorrow we're going back into the park, Lord willing. Thanks so much for the comments - we LOVE hearing from you! Blessings to all!
Well, I woke up about 6:45am yesterday (Monday) to boys “quietly” putting on their shoes. I came out to the kitchen area to find Nathan & Nicholas getting ready to go fishing. They had discovered that the waters they were fishing in were about 15 ft deep, and if they moved the lures up then they would have the bait more towards the bottom where the fish are (a local told them about that). So I told them to fish for about ½ hour because we needed to get moving. They came back so excited because they both had caught 1 fish a piece! They were too small to keep, but they had caught some fish, nonetheless, and now they felt complete! Nathan took some pictures of the great catches they made, and here are the pics: We then gathered breakfast and lunch and hopped in the car and drove to Mt. Rainier eating breakfast on the way. So yes, we did get up early and left early after all! It can be done. It was, again, an overcast day, so we never did get to see the mountain (wah!). But the drive in was beautiful, and we did stop at the visitor’s center to see a video on Rainier (which is an active volcano – betcha didn’t know that). I took a picture of our dashboard as we left the visitor’s center because it was only 39 degrees! Brrr! And I forgot my coat, but Tim was gracious enough to lend me his jacket We stopped at a waterfall on the way down and took a little hike to it – gorgeous! This guy and I struck up a conversation because he noticed my Bucs hat and he and his wife are from Clearwater. Turns out they live right next door to the parents of the girl who started truecouponing, and they are fellow believers – he used to be a Navy pilot and also a pilot for JARS, which is a missionary aviation organization. We had such a great time with them we used up or picnic time (no problem as it was still only 39 degrees!) so we ate lunch in the car on the way down. Not too far outside of the park we saw this cool looking 'hotel' made up of railroad cars called the Hobo Inn. Here are some pictures (including Hobo Inn) from our time with Mt. Rainier: We were able to pack up pretty quickly and get out of our campground, but we were a few hours down the road when Tim felt the RV pulling and dragging pretty badly. We pulled off into a rest area that just happened to be right there (thankfully!), and sure enough, our left front tire was down about 30 pounds (and this was after Tim filled it right before we left that morning). Thank God for Good Sam because all it took was a phone call, and 30 minutes later a guy showed up to change our tire for us! Woohoo! The rest area had a huge grassy area, so the boys enjoyed a little football while waiting. We decided to make the best of the time and have dinner right there, so we didn’t get out of there until pretty late (can’t remember the exact time). Since we were planning on camping at Wally World (aka Walmart) in Spokane it didn’t really matter what time we got there, so we decided to press on. We arrived around 11pm last night, but had a very nice drive watching the sunset in the rearview mirror and then the kids got ready for bed and spent time in their beds reading while Tim and I talked. Very peaceful. Here's some pictures of the guy changing our tire - man were we thankful for him!! This morning we restocked our supplies from Walmart, got some gas, and were on the road by the crack of ... noon. :-) We stopped by a NAPA to get some part that Tim was looking for, when Nicholas complained of something on his back. Upon further investigation, we saw this big tick smack dab in the middle of his back just sucking away! Gross!!! So Tim performed the operation to remove the tick with his able bodied assistant, Noah, providing the band-aid. So that was the fun and excitement for the day. Nathan started reading about all these diseases you can get from tick bites (thanks a lump) so all we can do is hope and pray nothing like that happens to him! We just arrived at our campground here in Montana and saw some gorgeous country through Idaho and Montana along the way, saying good-bye to the Pacific timezone and hello to Moutain time as we crossed the border between Idaho and Montana. Coeur d’Alene lake was absolutely gorgeous! Tomorrow we are planning on going to Glacier National Park, Lord willing. Sorry for the long post here – I’ll try to keep it shorter next time. Here are some pictures from Coeur d'Alene lake in Idaho and then Flathead lake in Montana - beautiful!
While we thoroughly enjoyed spreading out in our friends’ cabin and having some room to breathe, we also wanted to make sure it was clean before we left, and when you are talking 5 bed linens and 4 bathrooms and a big kitchen and all that square footage of floors, bottom line, it took us 6 hours to clean it before we felt comfortable leaving it! Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have it any other way - we are so grateful we had this haven to stop at, I'm mainly just explaining why we were so delayed in getting on the road. We had planned on getting up at 6:30am and cleaning until 10:30am and hitting the road. Well, we didn’t get home until after 10pm from Crater Lake, so by the time we got to bed it was close to midnight. We ended up oversleeping the 6:30am mark by….oh… a couple of hours (oops!). That, coupled with the fact we underestimated how long it would take us to clean, our departure time was set way back to about 3pm. With a 6 ½ hour drive ahead, and time to stop for gas and a quick grocery run, we arrived at our campground at 10:15pm last night.
We had a great view of Mt. Hood on the way, so I got a couple of shots of that, but it was completely dark by the time we were approaching Mt. Rainier, so no luck on seeing that. This morning we had the luxury of no specific agenda, so I woke up and went outside to have my quiet time by the lake here. When I came back, I ended up waking Nicole up at about 10am – ah yes, the teenage years are definitely upon us! Breakfast was waffles for the kids and eggs and fried potatoes for us adults – yummy! I think breakfast is my favorite meal! The place we are staying at has a basketball court, and it was calling Nathan’s name all through breakfast. He finally got out there, and then the other boys (including Tim) eventually joined him, along with other campers, and they had a full fledged game going on! It was definitely a huge highlight for Nathan. He has missed playing a lot, so today has been great for him! After the big game, Tim got a shower and then called us all out for Little Church. We had our camping chairs all set up in a nice circle and were about to start, when Nathan announced that he was hungry. Well, no wonder – it was 2:30pm!! So I raced in and made some sandwiches, Noah grabbed snacks, and Nicole brought out drinks and we had a quick bite to eat while singing some hymns and songs to get us started. Then we all shared our verses and songs, and closed in prayer. I’m so thankful for a country where I don’t have to hide in fear of imprisonment in order to worship my God. What an amazing blessing I don’t ever want to take for granted! We were debating about heading up to Mt. Ranier since we are leaving tomorrow, but it has been quite overcast today, and the people at the office said we could stay as long as we want tomorrow since we got in so late last night and they don’t have anyone coming in tomorrow (and today saw a mass exodus from this place – the whole row of campers we were in are now all gone except us!), so we decided to continue our day of rest here! Tim bought some worms at the store, and the boys have been fishing since then. It’s not really crazy cold here (I think it’s in the 50’s) but I got chilled today more than I have so far on this trip, but nothing that another layer of clothes and a cup of hot chocolate couldn’t remedy! Tonight we are planning on making a fire and roasting hot dogs, but I just realized it is already 8pm, so I'll probably just boiled the hot dogs and call it a day. :-) Tomorrow, we’re planning on getting up early to go see Mt. Rainier. Will we actually get up early or not? What do you think? Stay tuned for the answer…. In the meantime, pictures! First, some shots of Mt. Hood from yesterday, and then pictures of our campground today. Hope everyone has had a great weekend! Blessings! We have been SO glad we took an extra day here. Yesterday was so nice to just stay in one place. I put in about 4 hours work, Tim did a few hours work as well, and we played lots of games with the kids! It was perfect for marking the halfway point of our trip. While we were getting ready to go to Crater Lake this morning, the boys took a brief hike into the woods out back here, just to get primed, so Nicole snapped this picture as they headed out to face the dangers of the unknown. They came back reporting only several bug sightings and lots of trees, but they had a great time and were ready to conquer the Great Crater Lake! We drove the almost 2 hours to Crater Lake eager for the adventure after taking a day "off" so to speak. As we entered the park, we started noticing snow, and then more snow, and then lots of snow! So we finally parked and got out for some rigorous snowball fighting, and then Nicole demonstrated her conquering of the mighty snowball mountain (at least, to us Floridians it was like a mountain!) Then it was time to see the lake. We didn't realize we could have walked a few steps from the parking lot we were in over to a ridge and seen it (you'll see some pictures of that spot further down), so we got in our car and started driving around the rim. We rounded a bend and the sight literally took my breath away! I just kept saying, "Wow!" It is the deepest blue I have ever seen in a body of water. It has no rivers running to or from it - it is completely made by snow run off. It is actually a collapsed volcano! Here are just a couple shots of our first views of it: There is only one place where you are authorized to go down to the lake, and so we drove to the parking lot there and proceeded to take the 1.1 mile 'strenuous' hike down. I snapped this picture of the boys on the way down - are they a motley crew or what? :-) They had to have their walking sticks, and Tim brought his fishing gear because you can fish at Crater Lake with no fishing license and catch as much as you want! Can you see how clear the water is? And we were still pretty high up! (We talked to a couple of park people who said they fill their cooler full of the water every day and drink from it, but they don't advertise you can drink from it just in case someone did get sick and sue them. But we drank the water and it was delicious!) We finally made it to the bottom and grabbed some lunch before continuing our exploration. Then, Dad and the boys went one way to go fishing, and Nicole and I went the other way in search of the 15 foot drop into the lake we had heard about. Nicole was actaully thinking of going in! However, once we got there and she saw she would have quite an audience due to the amount of people there (about 20), she opted out. I really can't blame her, but more because of how COLD it was! I did snap this picture of one of the people jumping in, and it came out so good (from my cell phone no less) I just had to include it here. We made the trek over to see how the boys were doing, and it was quite a long trip across rocks and dirt. Here are some pictures from the rest of our time by the lake: Nicole and I started out for the car first, and it really was a strenuous 1.1 mile hike back up (at least for me!!)! But we finally made it back up, and then the boys gave up their fishing quest (no, they didn't get any). You couldn't use live bait, only lures, so I think that was their excuse for not catching anything. :-) We piled into the car and drove back to the snowball fight place so that they could try to build snowmen, but their hands got so cold they finally gave up. But I noticed that ridge I told you about earlier and walked up it and had to get a family photo there. Enjoy! Tomorrow we take off for Mt. Rainier!
