Charleston, SC

Well, we're here!  We arrived at about 5:30pm to this beautiful county park here in Charleston County.  Tim and I stayed in Charleston for our anniversary several years back, and I didn't remember it having very much to do here so I only planned 2 nights (really only 1 day) here.  I'm kind of kicking myself now, because after researching on the internet tonight it seems there's a lot more to do here with kids than I thought.  If we had planned ahead (even just 2 weeks ahead, according to websites) there are cool historic and scientific tours available all around this city especially for school aged kids.   The SS Yorktown is here, and even hosts kids and their chaperones overnight on it (again, if you plan ahead).  Tim's father was on the SS Yorktown, but we're trying to chose between it and a tour of Ft. Sumter and we are both leaning towards Ft. Sumter for various reasons.  Maybe we can come back another time and do the SS Yorktown thing.  Charleston really isn't that far of a drive from the Tampa area, so it would definitely be doable.  The main driving force behind the schedule  right now is to place us in Washington DC in less than 2 weeks because I actually did plan ahead for that visit by booking tours through our congressman.  Plus, this park is more expensive than I thought, so staying here longer than 2 nights isn't really in the budget.  But it is a pristine park - absolutely gorgeous!  I mentioned before that my 1st mistake was to plan our first stop for only 3 nights.  I'm thinking that a week at each stop (not just the 1st stop) is really more appropriate.  So after Washington DC, I'm trying to plan 4-7 nights at each of our destinations from there.  Hopefully, that will work out better!  Well, tomorrow will come early, so I'm off for now.  Blessings to all!

Oopppsss.... sorry about that first post - my trigger finger got too happy!
Daniel and I are doing much the same thing, mapping out our course and planning for each place accordingly. We are planning to drive 250-300 miles [once] per week and staying put until our next leg - it may or may not work, we'll learn to adjust accordingly. That will put us at a little over 12,000 miles at the end of our year (and take us through the entire US). However, it seems that, for us, maybe more than a year might be something we will think about :o) There is SO much to see and I really want to go into Alaska (during the summer). That will mean another trip up that way at a different time. We'll just have to see!
There's a pass you can buy that cuts the cost of your stays to $15-$20 per night. I want to say it was $120 for the year, but I cannot, for the life of me, remember what it was. I'm sure if you ask around the park, some of the full-timers will know (or Google it). We found out through some full-timers ourselves.
In any case - it sounds like you're having a great time out-and-about and we're definitely enjoying reading about it! Not to mention - it's great wisdom for those of us getting ready to make such a trip! Learning through your "mistakes". Godspeed on your trip!

I saw your post on the families on the road blog roll. I think I know where you are staying, we tent camped there last May, it is a county park, and really nice, the name escapes me. It was a little pricey, i think we paid $28 to tent camp, which i thought was high. Anyway, my point is to let you know that you can show your window sticker at Folly beach and go the park there for free and save $7 or $8. They never told us, the lady at folly beach saw the sticker and told us that they were connected and we wouldn't have to pay. Just thought I would pass that on.
