We had to drop off our camper this morning due to some more brake problems (front ones this time – last time it was back brakes). We then went to Mammoth Cave, and about 10 minutes before we arrived at the Visitor’s center it started lightly snowing. The kids were just loving it! When we got there they tried to catch the snowflakes on their tongues, but it was so light they couldn’t even really see it. It never stuck to the ground and it stopped shortly after it started, but they still enjoyed seeing it. The caves were really cool, seeing the stalagmites and stalactites, and the layers and layers of rock. I can’t remember how many miles of caves they had, but there are like 5 or 6 layers of caves deep in an area about 7 miles x 7 miles. We went down to layer 3 (I believe that’s what they said) and spent most of our time there. The park itself was pretty deserted, which I thought was interesting because the weather outside really doesn’t affect the weather in the caves – it’s always pretty much the same – in the low 50’s. But they said they typically have tours consisting of up to 120 people in the summer, and our tour only had 8 people (our 6 plus another couple). We felt like we had our own private tour! Here are some pictures of our time inside the cave:
